44 DISCOVER HAWAI‘I Hanauma Bay Nature Preserve Start early and head east of Waikīkī, taking the Kalaniana‘ole Highway to Hanauma Bay Nature Preserve. Here, enjoy a unique snorkelling experience at one of Hawai‘i’s premier marine parks, sheltered in the curved bay of a volcanic crater. Small entrance fee applies. Open daily at 6 am (closed Tuesdays). Hālona Blowhole Continue on Kalaniana‘ole Highway, stopping off at Hālona Blowhole — a lava tube that can shoot water up to nine metres when the tide is high. Makapu‘u Point & Lighthouse Five minutes up the road you’ll find Makapu‘u Point and Lighthouse — the most easterly point on O‘ahu and known for the island’s best body surfing. Take a leisurely hike to the top of Makapu‘u sea cliff for whale watching, December to April. Waimānalo Beach Return to the highway and 10 minutes’ drive up the coast you’ll discover Waimānalo Beach — perhaps the prettiest stretch of white-sand beach on O‘ahu, with views of the majestic Ko‘olau Range. It’s the perfect spot for a picnic. Kailua Beach Follow the highway north and turn right at Kailua Road to discover Kailua Beach. Stretch in the soft, white sand and take a refreshing swim, kayak or windsurf in the beautiful waters. Byodo-In Temple Next make your way along Kāne‘ohe Bay Drive and onto the Kahekili Highway to see Byodo-In Temple at the base of the 610 meter Ko‘olau Range. A replica of a 900-year-old Buddhist temple in Kyoto (Japan), it was built in memory of the first Japanese immigrants to O‘ahu who worked in the sugar plantations. Enter at the Valley of the Temples Memorial Park. Kualoa Continue north on the Kahekili Highway (it becomes Kamehameha Highway) until Kualoa — one of the most sacred sites on O‘ahu and listed on the National Register of Historical Places. Visit Kualoa Ranch, in operation since 1850 and now offering horseback riding, movie set tours, archery, jet skiing, kayaking, snorkelling and simple relaxation over lunch (you can pre-book or just walk in). Nu‘uanu Pali Lookout Head back towards Honolulu along the Kamehameha Highway and then the Pali Highway. You’ll soon reach Nu‘uanu Pali Lookout, with superb views of the sheer Ko‘olau cliffs. Perched more than 900 meters above O‘ahu’s coast, it’s the site of the battle of Nu‘uanu, where in 1795 Kamehameha I won the struggle that finally united all islands south of O‘ahu under one rule. FINISH WINDWARD COAST IDEALLY, EXPERIENCE THIS ITINERARY IN STAGES OVER TWO TO THREE DAYS.
