94 DISCOVER HAWAI‘I The Hawaiian Islands: Fast facts SUN SAFETY Apply sunscreen often (year-round). Wear sunglasses and a wide-brimmed hat. GENERAL SAFETY TIPS Be as security-conscious as you would be at home. Don’t leave valuables unattended or in plain sight in a hire car, on the beach, or in restaurants or lobbies (lock them in the hotel/room safe). Take only essential items to the beach and put keys/valuables in a waterproof bag and keep them with you. Carry little cash and leave extra cash/credit cards in the hotel safe. Make use of travellers’ cheques, ATM facilities and/or credit cards. EMERGENCY ASSISTANCE CONTACT DETAILS Visitor Aloha Society of Hawai‘i (VASH) was established to assist visitors who have been victims of a crime or other adversities. Hawai‘i is among the safest tourist destinations in the world but unfortunately crime against visitors can never be completely prevented. VASH O‘ahu – (808) 926-8274 VASH Hawai‘i Island – West (808) 756-0785 VASH Hawai‘i Island – East (808) 756-1472 VASH Kaua‘i – (808) 483-0111 VASH Maui – (808) 244-3530 Download your safety eBrochure at travelsmarthawaii.com HAWAI‘I STATE TAX Hawai‘i does not have a sales tax. Instead a General Excise Tax applies which varies by county (island): Kaua‘i – 4 .166%; O‘ahu – 4.712%; Moloka‘i – 4.166%; Lāna‘i – 4.166%; Maui – 4 .166%; and Hawai‘i Island – 4.166%. Please note that this tax is not included in the advertised price of goods (it is added on at the time of purchase). HOTEL ROOM TAX In addition to the General Excise Tax, all visitors are required to pay a Transient Accommodations Tax of 9.25 percent for their accommodation (hotels, resorts, B&Bs and apartments). This means that accommodation will attract a tax of between 13.416%–13.962% (General Excise Tax + Transient Accommodation Tax). Some resorts/hotels also charge a daily ‘resort fee’ of approximately US$25 per person. WATER SAFETY Hawai‘i’s ocean is beautiful, but it can also be dangerous. Strong, hidden currents can overpower even experienced swimmers and standing on rocky outcrops can be dangerous due to sudden, powerful rogue waves. Conditions in the water constantly change. Remember: • waves come in sets and conditions can be calm for up to 20 minutes between dangerous sets of waves • swim only where lifeguards are on duty • do not fight a rip current (keep calm, float, wave for help and go with the current to conserve energy) • use the buddy system – never swim alone and know your limits • when in doubt, don’t go out • nude bathing and nude sun-bathing are prohibited across Hawai‘i. HIKING SAFETY Hawai‘i is the perfect destination for hiking but some trails are for experienced hikers only. Make sure you do your research (degree of difficulty and length), let people know where you’re going, carry a mobile phone and water, and always hike with a partner. Never stray off a trail. Staying on paths helps to protect native plants. It’s also safer because many trails have hidden cliffs. 3. Take your own water. Water from streams may look clear but may contain bacteria.
