Driving tips for Hawai‘i Island: Allow a full day to circumnavigate Hawai‘i Island by car and start early. Relax and experience the local side of the Island in Downtown Hilo. Visit incredible museums like the Lyman Museum and Mission House, the ‘Imiloa Astronomy Center of Hawaii, East Hawaii Cultural Center, Hawaii Volcanoes National Park You can easily spend a day at Hawaii Volcanoes National Park, exploring two active volcanoes, Kīlauea and Mauna Loa. With steaming volcanic craters, rainforest lava tubes, stunning views and lava flows creating new sections of the park every day, Kīlauea's dramatic black hulk almost feels alive due to the constant volcanic activity, while Maunaloa is the largest volcano on the planet. Take a day hike to witness dramatic sights such as Nahuku (Thurston Lava Tube), Halema‘uma‘u Crater and lava meeting the sea at lookout points at the end of Chain of Craters Road or in nearby Kalapana.
